Prayers

I started writing prayers for climate change because I couldn’t find any that used the theological, ecological, and humanitarian language that actually describes what is happening in this climate changed world. So I wrote my own. Most prayers are written in the form of a collect, a short formulaic prayer commonly found in the Episcopal tradition. Here are a few of my favorites.

“For Loss of Community”

O God of our hearts, who cares not where we lay our heads, comfort us this night. The spaces and people that once defined our story are now gone due to a changing climate. Be with us as we grieve this loss and as we mourn the memories once held dear by our physical surroundings that now only remain in our hearts. Give us the strength to rise tomorrow and take one new step toward your everlasting community; in the name of God, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen

For Healing from Pollution”

Lord God of the risen son, who promises with every sunrise that death does not have the final say, we ask for your healing powers to mend our bodies crippled by pollution. Poisoned by the refuse of bygone progress, these earthly vessels you have gifted us are now weak. Give us the energy we need for this day, give our neighbors the hearts to fight alongside us, and give our leaders the wisdom to create healthy communities for all; in the name of the Creator, the Risen One, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

For the Will to Act”

O Divine Creator of the sentinel species, whose creation sings your praises and concerns, give us ears to listen to the cries of all our living kin, give us mouths to amplify their message to our leaders, and give us the energy to act upon the changes needed for all to survive; in the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Source of all Wisdom. Amen.

For Climate Refugees”

O God of the fleeing Mary and Joseph, who watched them perilously journey to safety, we pray for that same protection as we seek safety this night. As waters rise, lands dry up, and fires roar, as landscapes that once defined a culture are now turned into bitter battlefields, hear our cries as we grieve what is left behind, guide us to safety as we seek a new homeland, and embolden us to deepen our roots in new soil; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Healthy Soils”

Almighty and everlasting God, who by your son Jesus Christ showed us the importance of rooting our hearts in the healthy soil of your love, grant that we may do the same with the soils of this Earth. From the potted plant to the industrial farm and all of the important ways of honoring this Island Home in-between, humble our hearts so that we may learn from the gift of your rich soil, a gift that provides sustenance for all life. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

For Working Together”

O merciful Creator, who taught us the way of love through your son Jesus Christ, grant us the kindness to work with those we oppose so that all may be safe from the shifts caused by our changing climate. Stir in us an unfailing determination to see the reign of justice, humble our hearts to know when to listen, and grant us the wisdom to know the difference; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

For Those who are Weary”

O Holy One, who brings light to the darkness and even in the darkness says “I am here,” comfort us. The arc toward justice feels longer than we had thought. Suffering still surrounds us. Our weary bones are exhausted. We turn to you, O God, in this moment of despair. Bring us rest in this time of darkness; In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Source of all Wisdom. Amen.

For the Courage to Speak Truth to Power”

O God of the Spring birds, who is glorified in the diversity of their song, give us the same courage to use our unique voices on behalf of our planet. Creating a healthier world for all will take all of the voices you have created. Embolden us to speak with the courage and to sing with the grace of songbirds; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Only What We Need”

O God of Israel, who sustained your wandering people with bread from heaven, grant that we may truly embrace our covenant that asks that we only receive what we need today. We repent of our overconsumption as we realize the strain this puts on all of creation, especially the most vulnerable; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
